From the Washington Post article: Celine Gounder, an epidemiologist and infectious-disease specialist who advised Biden’s transition team on the coronavirus response, said she was unhappy that the White House prioritized restrictions and testing for international travelers while overlooking domestic flights.  “When you think about Texas, it’s the size of France — and it operates as its own country in many respects,” Gounder said, calling for a renewed focus on how state policies contribute to the virus’s spread. “If you’re really trying to prevent spread of dangerous variants, you should be providing similar standards across the board.”  Asked about additional restrictions on domestic and international flights, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Thursday that “nothing is off the table” when it comes to controlling the virus’s spread. Psaki said the administration is considering what is “most implementable” but noted that “our most important factor is what […]

Try periodic fasting and regular exercise.  Quote from linked story:  "Ryan Julian, a chemistry professor at UCR, said in a press release, “roughly 20% of people have the plaques, but no signs of dementia. This makes it seem as though the plaques themselves are not the cause.”   The amino acids that make up proteins like tau can either be right-handed or left-handed isomers, and normally proteins in living things are made from all left-handed amino acids, explained Julian.  However, most proteins only survive for less than 48 hours in the body, and if they hang around too long, certain amino acids can convert into the other-handed isomer. So that means a left-handed isomer could inadvertently convert into a right-handed isomer, which can lead to serious problems.   “If you try to put a right-handed glove on your left hand, it doesn’t work too well. It’s a similar problem in biology; molecules don’t work the way they’re supposed to after a while because a left-handed glove can actually convert into a right-handed glove […]

For health-conscious people with a sweet tooth, the holidays can be hard. Work break rooms are cookie-filled minefields, family parties have entire rooms devoted to desserts, and every corner coffee shop is filled with sugar-laden caramel-frappa-peppermint-mocha concoctions. Impossible Question Click here for the Impossible Question.   Masks and Your Health Sent in from a listener: #2 on page 2 of the Denver order says that anyone who cannot medically tolerate a mask is exempt from wearing one. This is the same wording for Tri-County Health & Jeffco. It does not say you need any proof, like a doctor’s note, to receive the exemption. I carry a copy of the order with me highlighting the exemption and they cannot ask me what my medical condition is that exempts me. I’ve been asked twice to put on a mask and when I told them I was exempt and if they want to see the exemption, the establishment passes and allows me to enter. More people need to read the order and realize that we all are medically exempt due to oxygen deprivation, bacteria build up on the mask and mental health stability because we can’t see others faces (just my opinion – not fact-based reasons) http://www.tchd.org/DocumentCenter/View/9821/Mask-Order-in-All-Public-Indoor-Spaces_11232021 https://www.jeffco.us/DocumentCenter/View/29819/JCPH-PHO-21-006-Requiring-Face-Coverings-in-Public-Indoor-Spaces https://www.denvergov.org/files/assets/public/covid19/documents/public-orders/amended-pho-face-covering-order-2021228.pdf Comments here.
