H.R. 1 The “Federal Government Takeover” of Election Law
House Democrats on Monday announced that every single member of their caucus is supporting H.R. 1, the Free People Act. Billed as a way to expand voting rights, the legislation includes everything from a D.C. statehood resolution, to compromising donor privacy, to automatic voter registration. Republicans have said the bill amounts to a “federal government takeover” of election law.
David Keating, the president of the Institute for Free Speech (IFS) says: “H.R. 1 would trample on our First Amendment rights and would impose sweeping new restrictions on speech about campaigns and public affairs. It’s full of complex and unworkable rules, and invades the privacy of nonprofits and their supporters hindering their ability to speak freely about politics.
H.R. 1 would also lead to less speech by experts and watchdog groups, which means worse laws, and less accountability for government leaders. This bill is a blatant assault on the Constitution.” IFS submitted statement on H.R.1: https://www.ifs.org/expert-analysis/house-administration-committee-letter-hr1-2021/.
